INDÓMITA 8: The exhibition honoring Jorge Severino through art and fashion at Chavón

The Altos de Chavón Art Gallery has hosted Season 8 of INDÓMITA, the «open doors» platform that has established itself as a key driver for elevating and promoting contemporary Dominican art and fashion.

Successfully inaugurated last Friday, November 14th, this exhibition is not just a showcase of design, but a vibrant declaration of identity and collaboration, open to the public until December 2nd, 2025.

Founded by Karina Cortorreal in 2021, INDÓMITA's mission is bold and essential: to connect fashion designers, artists, and artisans to create unique collections that serve as a vehicle for Dominican culture. Operating under a thematic seasonal format, the eighth edition draws its deep inspiration from the legacy of the unforgettable visual artist Jorge Severino (1935-2020).

Severino, the painter of contrasts

INDÓMITA has managed to recreate the «magical world» that inhabited Severino's work, described by Fernando Ureña Rib as «A painter of contrasts.» Known for his iconic female portraits—from his «sad dolls» to his elegant, dark-skinned Caribbean «queens»—Severino cultivated a mastery that earned him the 2019 National Visual Arts Prize.

The exhibition celebrates its fascination with beauty, elegance, and myth, offering designers a rich and complex narrative canvas. The result is a collection that feels as curious and storied as the master's painting.

Collaboration is dressed in art

This season stands out for the diversity and commitment of the participating designers:

ATTELIO Modern Tailoring: Offers a vision of classic tailoring fused with contemporary approach and versatility, creating pieces that capture the timeless elegance often found in Severino's canvases.

Erick Lemos: It delves into popular and Caribbean culture, translating everyday stories and archetypes into fashion that confronts and celebrates local identity.

Milée Collection From an environmentalist perspective and through Upcycling, this brand demonstrates how sustainable fashion can be innovative and aesthetically relevant, calling for conscious consumption and triple impact.

PAOLA | Women's Ready-to-Wear: With timeless, cheerful, and versatile pieces, designer Paola Santana dresses today's active woman, maintaining the palette of contrasts and honest joy that characterize her inspiration.

Bijacabuya This artisanal curatorship project, created by Vanessa Languasco and Simón de Los Santos, closes the circle by recontextualizing local craftsmanship, providing the link of tradition that complements high fashion.
