A Day with the Archaeologist: An Educational Experience to Bring Students Closer to Their Roots

The Altos de Chavón Regional Museum held last Monday, October 5, the educational activity "A Day with the Archaeologist", an initiative aimed at elementary school students with the purpose of bringing them closer to archaeology, history, and the cultural heritage of the Dominican Republic.

The event featured the participation of the renowned Spanish archaeologist Adolfo López, noted for his research on Caribbean rock art, particularly in the Dominican Republic, who shared with the students his knowledge and experiences in the field of archaeology.

In this first edition, participated 18 students from educational institutions such as Hogar del Niño and MIR Foundation, who had the opportunity to live an educational experience designed to awaken their curiosity and strengthen their interest in knowing and preserving their cultural roots.

During the talk, the archaeologist dynamically explained to the students what the work of an archaeologist consists of, how an archaeological investigation is carried out, and the importance of knowing the past to better understand the present. He also highlighted the value of cultural heritage in the education and formation of new generations.

As part of the experience, the students participated in activities in the museum's interactive classroom, where they learned up close about the process of discovery, identification, and conservation of archaeological pieces. Through educational resources and practical explanations, they were able to understand the care these objects require to preserve their historical and cultural value.

The event also included a tour of the museum, during which Adolfo López explained the origin, meaning, and value of various pieces belonging to the Taíno heritage, as well as some of the processes related to their discovery and conservation.

The gathering concluded with a question-and-answer activity, in which the students had the opportunity to share their concerns and deepen the knowledge acquired during the event.

As a closing of the activity, the Management of Altos de Chavón and the Altos de Chavón Regional Museum presented certificates to the participants, as recognition for their enthusiasm and participation in this learning experience, symbolically making them "Archaeologists for a Day".

With initiatives like this, the Management of Altos de Chavón and the Altos de Chavón Regional Museum reaffirm their commitment to education and the preservation of cultural heritage, promoting in children and young people an interest in knowing their roots, valuing their history, and understanding the importance of protecting the legacy of our ancestors for future generations.
