Last February 27th, Altos de Chavón became the perfect stage to commemorate the National Independence of the Dominican Republic, offering an unforgettable evening full of music, tradition, and the vibrant essence of carnival.
Starting at 7:30 p.m., the iconic Chavón Plaza welcomed residents and visitors into a festive and family-friendly atmosphere, where Dominican culture took center stage. The band Dekadas by Dos en la Vía had everyone dancing with an electrifying repertoire of merengue, salsa, and bachata, bringing the unmistakable national rhythm to every corner of the event. The culinary experience elevated the celebration with an exquisite selection of typical delicacies, such as empanadas and chimis, which evoked the most authentic flavors of the country. Additionally, attendees enjoyed interactive activities, like a dynamic 360-degree selfie station, and explored local artisan stalls, where they found unique pieces to take home as a special souvenir of Dominican culture. As part of Chavón's characteristic charm, the beloved donkey Margarito also made an appearance, adding his charisma to the festivities.
One of the most anticipated moments of the evening was the carnival parade, which filled the square with color and energy with the presence of traditional characters such as stilt walkers, "diablos cojuelos," and the popular "roba la gallina." This display of creativity and folklore captivated the audience, highlighting the country's rich culture. To conclude the celebration with a touch of magic, a spectacular fireworks show lit up the sky in front of the historic San Estanislao Church, marking a dazzling finale to a night full of national pride.
This event not only united the community and visitors in a vibrant experience, but also reaffirmed the importance of preserving and celebrating the traditions that make the Dominican Republic a unique country.
