Exhibition “Art of Birth” at Jenny Polanco Chavón: a tribute to nativity scenes and Dominican identity

The Jenny Polanco Foundation (FJP) announces the inauguration of the exhibition “Art of Birth,” a show dedicated to the Dominican Nativity scene tradition. It opened to the public last Wednesday, November 26th, and will remain on display until January 6th at the Jenny Polanco Project Store. This initiative brings together the work of three master Dominican artisans, guardians of a legacy that combines art, spirituality, and culture.

The exhibition features nativity scenes created by:

● Natividad Pérez, a renowned artisan with over fifty years of experience in ceramics and the creation of Nativity scenes and faceless dolls. Hailing from the pottery community of Higuerito, Moca, her work is synonymous with tradition and delicacy.

Roosevelt Méndez, a master wood carver specializing in Nativity scenes and sacred art. Hailing from Azua, his pieces are notable for their symbolic expression and extraordinary technique.

Juan Puello, an artisan with over forty years dedicated to carving birds and fish in wood. With extensive experience in national and international fairs, he has received multiple awards and recognitions for the quality of his work.

Organized and coordinated by the Jenny Polanco Foundation, this exhibition aims to unite art, culture, and Christmas in a single space, offering the public an experience that rescues our roots, pays homage to our artisans, and reaffirms Dominican identity. Each nativity scene exhibited is a window into our traditions and a testament to the country's artisanal mastery.

“Art of the Nativity” constitutes FJP's second event dedicated to promoting national crafts as artistic and identity expressions. The first initiative, titled “Endemic and Native Birds of the Dominican Republic,” brought together bird carvers from the community of Cambita, San Cristóbal, and was held from July to October at the Jenny Polanco Project Store in Altos de Chavón.

With this new exhibition, the Jenny Polanco Foundation reaffirms its commitment to promoting Dominican art, celebrating its creators, and offering the public spaces where tradition and beauty meet.
