The Altos de Chavón Art Gallery kicked off the exhibition "Dos Voces Pop Rompiendo Reglas" (Two Pop Voices Breaking Rules) last Friday, December 13th. This event brought together various members of the Casa de Campo community to enjoy contemporary art in its purest form. The opening of the exhibition was celebrated with a cocktail reception that began at 7:00 PM and was attended by several local personalities.
This exhibition is held in collaboration with The Art People Project, a platform dedicated to the promotion, sale, and distribution of contemporary art in the Dominican Republic, focused on working with emerging and established artists. This initiative aims to offer exclusive collections that combine creativity, history, and high aesthetic value.
The exhibition, which will be open to the public at the Altos de Chavón Gallery until January 13, 2025, features a selection of works by two renowned international artists: GaboArt and Denis Ouch.
GaboArt: The Spirit of Cartagena in Urban Pop
GaboArt, an artist originally from Cartagena, Colombia, is characterized by his unique style that fuses elements of urban pop with mixed media techniques. His art is deeply influenced by the vibrant multiculturalism of his hometown, reflected in his bright color palettes and narrative nuances.
In this exhibition, GaboArt presents reinterpretations of classic pieces such as Las Meninas, The Scream, and Van Gogh's Sunflowers, in which they add contemporary characters and use bold colors, creating a connection between the classical and the modern. The works were created exclusively for The Art People Project, with an innovative approach that celebrates artistic tradition while paying homage to global culture through a pop lens.
Denis Ouch: Street Art and Social Critique from Brooklyn
On the other hand, Denis Ouch, a Russian artist based in Brooklyn, New York, brings his bold blend of stencil, graffiti, and collage to the exhibition, key elements of street art and pop art. Influenced by the raw and eclectic energy of the Brooklyn art scene, Denis uses his distinctive stencil and spray paint technique to reinterpret cultural icons and social themes with a provocative approach.
Among the most notable works in his collection are reinterpretations of the Mona Lisa, Muhammad Ali, and Elvis Presley, pieces that combine the sophistication of classical art with the irreverence of urban culture. Furthermore, the Denis map series, which reimagines iconic figures on New York City maps, has become one of his most recognized works and has been exhibited and sold in various parts of the world.
